OESA invites members and industry guests to attend an OESA Technology Town Hall:  “The Great Debates,” on April 1, 2010.  Participants may attend the meeting at the MSU Management Education Center or participate via live webinar.

John McElroy, president, Blue Sky Productions, and host of the television program “Autoline Detroit” and the daily webcast “Autoline Daily,” and Paul Haelterman, vice president, global advisory services, CSM Worldwide, will serve as co-moderators.

McElroy and Haelterman will be joined on stage by several executives from OESA member companies as they debate the future of four key technology areas: powertrain, vehicle lightweighting, active safety and connected vehicles.  As an example, Dr. Johannes-Joerg Rueger, senior vice president, engineering, Bosch Diesel Systems N. A., Robert Bosch LLC, Christian Dohr, president, TWB Co., Christian Schumacher, director, systems and technology, chassis and safety division, Continental, and Roger Berg, vice president, wireless technologies, DENSO International America, will participate in the powertrain, vehicle lightweighting, active safety and connected vehicles debates, respectively.

In real town hall fashion, attendees (live and via webinar) will be encouraged to participate in the debates.  McElroy and Haelterman will set the stage early during their introduction: “Let the Debates Begin.”

 Don’t Drink the Kool-Aid

“Electric cars are going to capture half the market in the next decade? Ha-ha! You’re not serious are you? And please don’t tell me you’re pinning your hopes on natural gas or hydrogen cars, either.

When it comes to safety, how far can automakers continue to expand their ‘connected car’ telematics before legislation and regulation ban it altogether? Forget about all this talk about ‘hands free,’ the research shows it’s still dangerous. Better make sure you’re not setting yourself up for a big, fat liability lawsuit.”
John McElroy

Better Find Out Before it’s Too Late

“All of you suppliers better be very careful before you invest your company’s hard earned capital in alternative powertrains. Some automakers have caught a bad case of ‘green fever,’ and their sales predictions are outrageously exuberant. You better learn about the pitfalls before you get caught with a bunch of unused capacity.

The same goes for lightweighting. Yes, OEMs are telling their suppliers they need to reduce mass. But are they truly going to pay more for lightweight components that use high-cost materials?”
Paul Haelterman
