Energy & Sustainability

Motor vehicle parts manufacturers have long recognized the need for cleaner, more efficient vehicles, and have taken steps to develop and manufacture the necessary technology to commercialize these advanced vehicles.  To reach this goal, parts suppliers and vehicle manufacturers are working together to develop technologies and products to increase vehicle fuel efficiency through engine technologies as well as secondary technology that directly impacts a vehicle’s fuel usage.

Suppliers now account for as much as 70 percent of the value-added in the manufacture of motor vehicles and over 30 percent of total automotive investment in research and development.  The industry continues to take on a greater role in the design, testing, and engineering of new vehicle parts and systems – a role that is expected to grow significantly in the coming years as federal requirements and consumers demand cleaner, more fuel efficient advanced vehicles.

MEMA encourages the United States Congress and the administration to consider several critical issues in any energy or climate change debate.  Any provisions considered by Congress must be technology neutral, provide equal access to resources, focus on safe and efficient mobility, and provide measures for manufacturing efficiency.
