CHICAGO -- Auto parts maker BorgWarner Inc. said on Monday it has opened a turbocharger and transmission component assembly plant at its manufacturing facilities in Ningbo, China, to meet growing heavy truck demand in Asia. The plant is the first of several operations planned for BorgWarner's campus in the Ningbo Yinzhou industrial zone, under its wholly foreign-owned company enterprise BorgWarner Automotive Components (Ningbo) Co. Ltd. Eventually, the plant is expected to supply most Chinese vehicle and engine manufacturers with turbochargers, emissions systems, timing chain systems and transmission controls, Auburn Hills, Michigan-based BorgWarner said. BorgWarner expects a five-fold increase in sales in China over the next five years and expects demand for advanced powertrain technology to rise as countries adopt more stringent European standards for emissions and air quality. The company, which opened a corporate office in Shanghai in 2004, also has joint ventures in China that supply transmission and thermal products.
