Complying with the Made in the USA Standard The Federal Trade Commission, charged with preventing deception and unfairness in the marketplace, has the authority to bring law enforcement actions against false or misleading claims that a product is of U.S. origin. In 1997, the Commission announced it would retain the “all or virtually all” made in the United States standard required for any product advertising itself as “Made in the USA.” This guide provides additional tips on compliance with the “all or virtually all” standard. It also offers general information about the U.S. Customs Service’s requirement that all products of foreign origin imported into the United States be marked with the name of the country of origin.
