Last month, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration published a notice in the Federal Register indicating that the agency has sent an Information Collection Request to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) at the White House. FMCSA plans on surveying motor carriers about the effectiveness of various technologies, programs and policies as the agency prepares to implement a Beyond Compliance program. MEMA advocated on behalf of the industry during congressional consideration of the FAST Act in 2015 for the creation of the Beyond Compliance program, that will recognize and reward motor carriers that exceed regulatory safety requirements.
In February, MEMA submitted comments to FMCSA supporting them moving forward to this program. There are a wide variety of existing, evolving and emerging technologies – all with tangible safety benefits – that should be eligible under such a program. MEMA supports the implementation of a Beyond Compliance program which will improve heavy-duty vehicle and fleet safety.
