As of press time, Senate Republicans were expected to release a new $1 trillion stimulus proposal that will lead to new negotiations and talks with Democrats. The proposal will include language to address continued payments to people who have lost their jobs and protections for employers reopening their businesses. The payments to unemployed people would extend the just-expired supplemental unemployment benefits, but at a lower level than the previous version. The language is also expected to include a new round of $1,200 direct stimulus checks and new funding for expanded virus testing.
House Democrats passed a much larger relief package in May, and Congress has only a couple of weeks to overcome the differences between the proposals. Congress is scheduled to be in session this week and next week.
