The oxygen sensor is one of the most misunderstood sensors on the vehicle. Oxygen sensors codes can be just the sensor indicating there is an issue with other systems. The respective residual oxygen content in the exhaust gas is determined ...via the oxygen sensors (lambda sensors) and compared with set points in the engine control unit. If this comparison yields a difference, the fuel metering is corrected via different modes in the mixture adjustment i.e. rich or lean.
