MEMA Applauds Automakers Pledge to Grow V2X Radio Deployments

Date: April 23, 2020

MEMA applauds the commitment of vehicle manufacturers to deploy five million radios in five years for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) applications in the 5.9 GHz band. The build-out letter from the Alliance for Automotive Innovation is a watershed moment for road safety – a unified industry is making a substantial resource commitment to communications.

The vehicle manufacturers pledge is contingent on the FCC maintaining all the spectrum allocated for transportation safety. MEMA has long advocated that this spectrum be preserved as intended and maintained in its entirety. Our industry needs certainty that all 75 MHz of the 5.9 GHz band will be available for V2X.

Suppliers are critical in the ongoing development and implementation of V2X technologies and are poised to meet the production needs of their customers to support this commitment. The promise to deploy five million radios in five years ensures that the network effects necessary to maximize the safety benefits of V2X will be achieved. The build-out commitment is a leap forward in realizing the joint vision of the U.S. DOT and FCC for V2X. Moreover, it will significantly advance U.S. global leadership in connected and autonomous vehicles.

Today’s industry-wide commitment should dispel any perception that the industry will not deploy V2X applications or that the spectrum will not be used.
