MEMA President Bill Long Will Speak in Mexico City about Motor Vehicle Trade Challenges

Date: July 09, 2019

The Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) President and CEO Bill Long is in Mexico City this week to speak at an annual meeting held by Industria Nacional de Autopartes, A.C., an automotive and auto part manufacturer advocacy group in Mexico.

The 17th Annual International Automotive Congress (CIIAM), held July 9-10 at the Citi Banamex Convention Center, is focused on the relationship between Mexico’s government and the nation’s industries and the details within the proposed new north American trade deal, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). USMCA has been ratified by Mexico but still awaits votes in the United States and Canada.

Long’s address plans to bring to light the current risks and opportunities of a new trade environment for the parts supplier industry, which in addition to the USMCA includes Section 301 tariffs on China, the threat of Section 232 tariffs on automobiles and motor vehicle parts and other new and emerging trade actions. MEMA has argued for the passage of the USMCA as well as the elimination of trade barriers between Mexico and the U.S.

“MEMA supports and urges the U.S. Congress to pass the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) without delay,” Long stated in May. “The USMCA will provide economic certainty and opportunity for manufacturing growth in the United States and throughout the region.”

Long will also attend the Mexico Technology Summit on Thursday, June 11, hosted by the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA). The summit will cover business technology and how it can be used to grow Latin America’s aftermarket industry. AASA will host the event at the Centro Citibanamex in room Palacio de la Canal 9.
