MEMA Speaks on EPA Heavy Duty NOx Initiative

Date: January 07, 2020

MEMA provided support at an U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) media event Monday announcing EPA’s release of an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) for the heavy-duty low NOx program – also known as its Cleaner Trucks Initiative. Representing the motor vehicle parts supplier industry on the issue, MEMA will urge the EPA to continue to collaborate with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) on the heavy-duty NOx rulemaking and work to harmonize the HD low NOx programs.

MEMA has been working with EPA and CARB staff on the issue since late-2018 by providing information and input on behalf of the motor vehicle parts supplier industry as well as the remanufacturing industry.

“MEMA appreciates that EPA is issuing an ANPRM and is offering an opportunity for industry to provide feedback on this important Cleaner Trucks Initiative,” said Laurie Holmes, MEMA Senior Director of Environmental Policy, at the event. “MEMA encourages EPA and CARB to continue to collaborate on the heavy-duty low NOx programs and to work to harmonize the programs as closely as possible. A harmonized program will help create the stability and certainty that manufacturers need to be competitive. MEMA looks forward to continuing its work with both EPA and CARB on this important initiative that will achieve additional NOx emissions reductions on the road and encourages implementation of best available technologies. The initiative also provides regulatory certainty for motor vehicle suppliers who have made significant investments in these important technologies.”
