MEMA Statement on Executive Orders Addressing Tariffs
Washington, D.C. – MEMA, The Vehicle Suppliers Association, acknowledges the Administration’s Executive Orders announced today. The association welcomes the additional clarity provided by the Executive Order concerning the stacking of different tariff regimes. MEMA views the elimination of multiple tariffs on a single part or input as an important step toward avoiding immediate disruption to U.S. manufacturers. Although further analysis is required, this adjustment is expected to provide much needed certainty to the companies in the supplier sector.
The second Executive Order addresses the specific Section 232 tariffs on automobiles and select automobile parts. It creates a new mechanism to reduce duties on vehicles that undergo final assembly in the U.S. Vehicle manufacturers would be eligible to apply for an “import adjustment offset amount.” The modifications offer relief to automakers who rely on a vast and interconnected network of suppliers to produce vehicles in the United States.
MEMA appreciates the Administration’s recognition of the importance of the auto industry and of the value of manufacturing and research and development activities by the industry. MEMA is currently assessing and reviewing the details of the Executive Order to understand the new process outlined in the text.
MEMA remains committed to ensuring that vehicle suppliers—who represent the largest sector of manufacturing jobs in the United States—have a strong, stable foundation from which to grow, invest, and innovate. As the Administration continues to address the tariffs and their implementation, MEMA will seek to highlight the impact on suppliers and the supplier industry’s contributions to economic growth and innovation in the U.S.
