MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers and SEMA Unite Industry Voices on ADAS Compatibility Challenges

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers and the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) joined forces to host leaders from the private sector for a symposium to address the growing challenges associated with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) calibrations. A renewed federal regulatory focus on mobility issues and vehicle safety, as well as rapid advancements in vehicle technology, are moving the aftermarket industry to enhance its ability to service vehicles. Held on May 13, 2025 at the SEMA Garage in Plymouth, Mich., the event resulted in a unified voice for automotive aftermarket service, parts, tools and equipment providers.
Leaders from across the industry worked through a series of exercises to identify problems with missing or improper calibrations, key industry trends, possible solutions and how the solutions might be developed. Various vehicle events can impact the placement of sensors and the ability of safety systems to perform as designed. These events can include minor bump-ins, improper tire pressure, hitting major potholes, modifying vehicles, heavy payloads, etc.
"As ADAS technologies become more integrated into today's vehicles, the aftermarket faces both tremendous opportunity and growing complexities," said Chris Gardner, senior vice president of technology at MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers. "The event we held with SEMA reflected our shared commitment to ensure that safety, serviceability and innovation remain at the forefront. MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers is proud to collaborate with SEMA in bringing the industry together to address calibration challenges, advocate for repair-friendly standards and ensure the aftermarket has a voice in shaping the future of mobility."
Participants in the ADAS Symposium included representatives from scan tool suppliers, ADAS calibration equipment suppliers, collision repair businesses, national service chains, vehicle modifiers, regional calibration centers, replacement part suppliers, specialty equipment suppliers, trade associations and other categories of companies that impact or are impacted by ADAS systems.
MEMA and SEMA will facilitate groups of industry volunteers that will work on solution ideas developed during the event.
