FMCSA Allows Cameras in Lieu of Mirrors

Date: January 8, 2019

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) recently announced five-year exemption to Stoneridge Inc., which allows its aftermarket mirrorless digital camera and sensor system to be installed on trucks and motorcoaches as an alternative to traditional mirrors.

FMCSA’s federal motor carrier safety regulations (FMCSRs) currently require trucks and buses to have two outside mirrors to provide the driver a rear view of both sides of the vehicle.

In the preview notice of its decision, FMCSA stated, “The Agency has determined that granting the exemption to allow use of the MirrorEye system in lieu of mirrors would likely achieve a level of safety equivalent to or greater than the level of safety provided by the regulation.”
