Commerce Publishes Export Controls on Geospatial Imagery AI – Takes Effect Immediately

Date: January 7, 2020

On Monday, January 6, 2020, the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) at the Department of Commerce published an Interim Final Rule to limit the export of artificial intelligence related to geospatial imagery. This rule takes effect immediately.

MEMA believes that member companies will be impacted by these export controls and urges companies to internally review the rule with technical and legal teams to determine impact.

As this is an Interim Final Rule, BIS will be accepting comments in response to the rule. MEMA plans to submit comments. Last year, MEMA submitted comments in response to BIS’s request for information on emerging technologies related to AI. Today’s publication is the first export controls rule on “emerging technologies,” and MEMA expects additional rules to be published in the future.
