House Democrats to Meet with Mexican President Next Week Regarding USMCA

Date: October 8, 2019

According to Politico Pro, House Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal, along with other legislators, are expected to meet with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in his country today to talk about Mexico’s labor enforcement budget and the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

The meeting is being scheduled as the House Democrats continue to negotiate with United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on conditions within the USMCA that concern the party, including prescription prices and labor protections.

“Democrats and labor groups, whose support could prove crucial to the deal’s fate in Congress, have been pressing to ensure the deal has enough teeth for Mexico to follow through with implementing its new labor reform law,” Politico Pro wrote. “But they expressed concerns about the initial budget Mexico released last month, which showed the government allotting significantly less money for enforcement than labor groups said was necessary.”
