Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairwoman Lisa Murkowski and ranking member Joe Manchin introduced the “American Mineral Security Act” last week in a move to boost domestic production of key minerals used in lithium-ion batteries for the electric vehicle industry.
The legislation will enlist federal officials to create a list of foreign-sourced minerals critical to the production of electric vehicles. It also streamlines permits for domestic mining of these minerals. This move will reduce the need of critical minerals that are vulnerable to geopolitical conflicts.
In addition to addressing the domestic product of critical minerals for the production of electric vehicles, the legislation would also create Energy and Labor department programs for energy technologies and workforce development as well as seeking to develop alternatives to the use of minerals that aren’t in abundance in the U.S.
