This Week in Congress

Date: August 13, 2019

Due to the August recess, the Washington Insider will not be published Aug 20 and the 27. It will return to its normal schedule beginning Sept 3.

Senators and members of Congress are in recess for the month of August, but negotiations on a final United States–Mexico–Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA) deal are continuing in Washington, DC, between the United States Trade Representative (USTR) staff and House Democratic staff. Both sides are currently constructing final labor, environmental, access to medicines and dispute resolution language so that drafts can be presented to USTR Robert Lighthizer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.) in early September. If an agreement is reached, a final USMCA deal can be voted on as soon as possible in late September or October.

MEMA is seeking assistance from members to encourage Congress to pass the USMCA. Here are a few ways you can get involved:

Contact your Members of Congress via the MEMA Action Center to explain why quick passage of the USMCA will benefit your business.

Host an event for your congressman at one of your plants or facilities. It is not too late to schedule in late August or early September.

Travel to Washington, DC on Sept 11 to urge your member of Congress to vote yes on USMCA as part of the MEMA USMCA Fly-In.

Please contact Bill Frymoyer at or Leigh Merino at if you have any questions or want to register for the Fly-in.
