White House Delays Tariff Increase on Chinese Goods and Extends Export Controls Comment Period

Date: December 18, 2018

Extensions have been granted on two important issues that MEMA has been advocating on behalf of suppliers.

This week, the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) published a preview notice on their webpage delaying the increase in tariffs to 25 percent on the third tranche of $200 billion in products from January 1, 2019 to March 2, 2019. These products are currently subject to a tariff of 10 percent.

Additionally, the Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industry and Security published an extension for the comment period on Export Controls on emerging technologies. The new deadline for comments is January 10, 2019. Fourteen technologies are listed as emerging technologies in ANPRM, including biotechnology; artificial intelligence; position, navigation and timing; advanced computing; data analytics; quantum information and sensing; logistics; additive manufacturing; robotics; brain-computer interface; hypersonics; advanced materials; and advanced surveillance. MEMA will be submitting comments. If you are interested in learning more about MEMA’s comment development on this topic, please contact Catherine Boland.
